UAE in Hellfire missiles deal
The UAE has placed an $8.2m order for air-to-ground missiles from US-based Hellfire, a subsidiary of defence giant Lockheed Martin.
The firm-fixed-price, no-option, foreign military sales contract modification award calls on the firm to produce Hellfire II missiles for the Gulf state.
According to the Lockheed Martin website, the Hellfire II is a tactical missile system that can be launched from multiple air, sea and ground platforms.
Some of the receipts from the sale will be handed to Boeing, Lockheed Martin’s former partner in the Hellfire programme.
Also on Tuesday, Lockheed Martin was awarded a $37.3m contract modification by the US Department of Defence to a previously awarded deal for engineering work on the Aegis air-defence platform. The company will be working on that contract until September next year.
It was also handed a $10.1m deal for the purchase of a single AN/BVY-1 Integrated Submarine Imaging System, plus associated spare parts, for the US Navy.
Figures released earlier this year showed that the Middle East region accelerated spending by 8.3 percent over the course of 2012 despite an overall slowdown in global military expenditure last year, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
