Production of the first of 30 Hawk advanced jet trainer aircraft for Middle East export customers has started at BAE Systems' Warton site in Lancashire.
The assembly of first fuselage frames for aircraft ST001 and ST002, which are destined for the Royal Saudi Air Force, started earlier this month, according production team leader Alistair Spavold.
About 300 staff are now working on the revamped Hawk production operation at Warton to deliver 22 of the aircraft to the RSAF and eight additional aircraft to the Royal Air Force of Oman, with the first of the new-build aircraft expected to fly in 2015 ahead of delivery in 2016.
The new production set-up 1, 2 and 3 Hangers at Warton will undertake fuselage manufacture and then final airframe assembly. The wings are being manufactured at the company's Samlesbury site and nose, tail and some other minor parts are being prepared at Brough. This arrangement sees some 75% of work on the aircraft carried out a Warton, a threefold increase in workload, said Spavold.
