First Tranche 3 Eurofighter completes engine ground runs
BAE Systems has completed engine ground runs involving Europe’s first Tranche 3 production example of the Eurofighter Typhoon, with the multirole type already sporting Royal Air Force markings.
Also carrying the RAF registration ZK355, single-seat production aircraft BS116 underwent the activity in a “de-tuner” facility at BAE’s Warton final assembly site in Lancashire, the UK.
Also covering checks of the combat aircraft’s fuel, hydraulic, electrical power generation, environmental control and pilot life support systems, the work was conducted in conjunction with an engineer from Eurojet EJ200 partner company Rolls-Royce.
“Engine ground runs are the last stage of testing before the aircraft makes its first flight, which is currently on target to take place before the year end,” says BAE.
Completed as part of a 112-unit Tranche 3A deal signed by Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK in 2009, the new production standard introduces provisions to accommodate an active electronically scanned array radar and conformal fuel tanks.
