Eurofighter Typhoon’s New AESA Radar Starts System Integration

The new AESA radar for the Eurofighter Typhoon is entering the system integration phase. During a 4-national program review at Cassidian’s Ulm site the test and integration results of the “Captor-E” Antenna subsystem were successfully presented to the representatives of the 4 Eurofighter core nations UK, Italy, Spain and Germany.
The test results achieved during the campaign were fully in line with the theoretical design and comply with the internationally agreed system specification by the four nations. The achieved results demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance and the high production standard of the Captor-E AESA antenna, the Repositioner and the corresponding Antenna Power Supply and Control Unit.
In a next step, the antenna sub-system will go to Selex Edinburgh for integration and test with receiver and processor. Final integration of the Captor-E radar into the industrial production aircraft (IPA5) is planned in springtime 2014.
The new radar for Eurofighter Typhoon named “Captor-E” (‘E’ for electronic scan) is able to fulfil several tasks simultaneously. The radar beam is scanning electronically which makes the radar extremely versatile. Contrary to conventional radars the emitting power is generated not in one central emitter but by several thousand transmit- and receive modules. Cassidian capitalizes on the biggest production line of these transmit/teceive modules in Europe.
The radar as a whole is being developed by the Euroradar consortium comprising Cassidian, Selex ES (UK and Italy) and Indra (Spain). The consortium already has developed and produced more than 400 mechanically scanning “Captor” Radars.

DSEI 2013: Progress soon on Typhoon AESA

A contract to begin building active electronically scanned array (AESA or E-Scan) radars for the Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft is expected within months, according to the UK's defence procurement minister.
Speaking at the DSEI 2013 defence and security exhibition in London, Minister for Defence Equipment & Technology Philip Dunne - who is heading to a meeting of his counterparts from Germany, Italy and Spain on 13 September - described the E-Scan radar as the "essential prerequisite for successful export of Typhoon".
"We are working with our partners in four nations and the [industrial] consortium to button this down," said Dunne on 11 September.

Privacy & Cookies DUBAI: Eurofighter claims multi-role breakthrough for Typhoon

With a major package of air-to-surface strike-related enhancements now being delivered, and flight tests also poised to begin with two cruise missile designs, the Typhoon is fully able to claim multi-role status, Eurofighter says.
Completing a so-called P1E package of enhancements “is a significant step forward,” says Laurie Hilditch, Eurofighter’s head of future capabilities. “It takes us to a position where it is a true swing-role aeroplane, with a fully integrated laser-designator pod and new weapons.”
“That really puts to bed any claim that the Typhoon is not a multi-role aeroplane,” Hilditch says. “It does both [air-to-air and air-to-surface], with equal
capability, and at the same time. Typhoon is seriously maturing,” he adds.

Another system that will strongly underline the Eurofighter’s longer-term strike potential is MBDA’s Storm Shadow cruise missile, which is poised to get airborne with instrumented production aircraft (IPA) 2 from Decimomannu air base in Sardinia, Italy. Plans to fly the combination this week have been thwarted so far by a cyclone, but the event is described as to occur “imminently”.“A major goal of the tests is to assess the Storm Shadow in flight and to achieve clearance for the full integration on the Eurofighter Typhoon by 2015,” the company says. This process will also be supported by using the German/Swedish-developed Taurus cruise missile, which will be flown with IPA 7 from Cassidian’s Manching site in Germany from December. To support the wider Storm Shadow integration effort, the work with Taurus will also give Eurofighter a head start should a future customer request the weapon for its aircraft. In another key advance for the Typhoon, Hilditch says good progress is being made towards incorporating an active electronically scanned array radar with the type. “We hope to have details frozen by the end of this year, and it is a clear target for ourselves and the core customers that we will be signing the contract between us in the middle of next year,” he says.Eurofighter chief executive Alberto Gutierrez was a no-show at the 20 November press conference, with his absence attributed to “a few business calls”. Company officials declined to comment on the current status of government-to-government discussions between the UK and the United Arab Emirates over a potential Typhoon order.

Eurofighter Aims for AESA Radar Contract by Mid-2014

Eurofighter is targeting the middle of 2014 to secure a deal with the fast jet’s
European partner nations to develop an active electronically-scanned array
(AESA) radar for the Typhoon, consortium officials said at the Dubai Airshow on
                    Wednesday.
“The details will be frozen by the end of the year and there is a clear
target from ourselves and our core customers, endorsed by our defense ministers,
to sign a contract between us by mid-2014,” said Laurie Hilditch, Eurofighter’s
                    head of future capability.

The deal will involve the development of a production-standard AESA radar by
                    the Selex ES-led Euroradar consortium.

Hilditch declined to give a timetable for completion of the program or cost
                    for the development contract.

A mid-year contract signing means it would be close to a two-year wait since
the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA) , which manages the
program on behalf of the British, German, Italian and Spanish governments,
issued Euroradar a request for proposals to develop the AESA system.

The drawn-out effort to make a production-standard AESA radar available to
the Typhoon partners and export customers has drawn criticism from many quarters
                    .

The slow pace of capability improvement approvals on Typhoon is partly
responsible for a determination by industry and partner government to change the
construct of Eurofighter and possibly NETMA to make the approval process more
agile as the emphasis of the program begins to move away from production of
aircraft for the European partners toward meeting export customers’
                    requirements.

Typhoon has already been sold to Austria, Oman and Saudi Arabia; the aircraft
is involved in export competitions in Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates,
                    Malaysia and Kuwait.

Eurofighter is a consortium involving BAE Systems, EADS and Finmeccanica.

Development work on the Selex radar, known as Captor-E, has been continuing,
partly funded by industry. Typhoon test aircraft IPA7 is almost ready to start
shakeout flights following modifications to make it capable of testing an AESA
                    radar.

The first flight is expected before the end of the year, after which the
machine will be fitted out with a development standard radar in the first
                    quarter of next year.

Hilditch told reporters at a briefing in Dubai that improvements to Typhoon’s
strike weapons capabilities are on track to allow flight test campaigns with
Storm Shadow and Taurus cruise missiles to get underway.

In the case of Storm Shadow, Alenia Aermacchi is expected to flight test the
weapon at the Decimomannu air base in Sardinia imminently; a similar campaign on
the Taurus is scheduled to get underway in December.

Eurofighter’s capability boss said full integration clearance for Storm
                    Shadow is planned for 2015.

Media reports said recently that the Storm Shadow integration work was being
mainly funded by the Saudi government.

The weapon is already used by the Saudis, British and Italians on Tornado
                    strike aircraft.

Integration work on the MBDA Meteor beyond visual range air-to-air weapon is
                    already going full tilt.

It’s not just Typhoon weapons and radars that drew interest here. The machine
being shown by BAE in the outside display park sported conformal fuel tanks
capable of significantly extending the range of the fighter without having to
sacrifice the use of weapon stations in order to carry drop tanks.

Hilditch said progress on clearance for the conformal fuel tanks was
dependent on which air force wanted them, but that all customers were interested
                    in the idea.

The latest standard of Typhoons, known as Tranche 3, now starting to come off
the assembly lines in all four European partner nations, are being fitted for
but not with conformal fuel tanks.

The first Tranche 3 aircraft, a Royal Air Force machine, is due to fly by the
                    end of the year.
