Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) said it is continuing preparations with its partner, Embraer, to deliver EMB-314 (A-29) Super Tucano light attack aircraft to Afghanistan under a US Air Force (USAF) Light Air Support (LAS) contract.
The companies are proceeding with production planning even as they await a US Government Accountability Office (GAO) decision expected around 17 June regarding a dispute over the LAS contract.
In March, the USAF announced it would disregard a Comptroller General order to halt work on the LAS contract because of a renewed protest by losing bidder Hawker Beechcraft. The USAF claimed the decision to override the stop-work order was necessary to speed the delivery of an air support capability to the Afghanistan Air Force (AAF).
Embraer and SNC were originally awarded the LAS contract back in 2011, but a protest by Hawker Beechcraft involving potential problems with source selection documentation meant the USAF had to wait until 27 February 2013 to re-award it. However, on 8 March Beechcraft filed a renewed protest and said it was "very perplexed" by the USAF's decision to again opt for the Super Tucano over its AT-6B Texan II.
