FARNBOROUGH: RAF Tornados to get Brimstone 2 missiles in 2015

Missile manufacturer MBDA has started production of its Brimstone 2 air-to-ground missile and expects the type will enter service in 2015 on Royal Air Force Panavia Tornado GR4s.

The company says the first production missile will be assembled this week at its sites in Lostock and Henlow in England.

Brimstone 2 has more range and accuracy, and a more-lethal warhead, than the original Brimstone, MBDA’s market development executive Cliff Kimpton says.
The weapons have semi-active laser guidance and millimeter wave radar, which allows them to strike moving targets.

The RAF’s Eurofighter Typhoons are also scheduled to receive the munition, but not until much later in the decade. This prompted the National Audit Office in February to issue a report warning that the UK will face a capability gap between 2019, when the Tornado is scheduled for retirement, and 2021, when Brimstone 2 is scheduled be integrated on Typhoon.

BAE Systems is studying the possibility of accelerating the integration work to 2018. However, MBDA has tested Brimstone 2 with the General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Reaper unmanned air vehicle, a paring seen as an alternative way of addressing the capability gap.

MBDA officials decline to comment about those tests or say whether the RAF is still pursuing the Reaper option.

Missile systems manufacturer MBDA has started production of its Brimstone 2 air-to-ground missile and expects the type will enter service in 2015 on Royal Air Force Panavia Tornado GR4s.

النرويج تروج للصواريخ الضاربة المشتركة جو - سطح JSM لزبائن المقاتلة F-35

FARNBOROUGH: Norway pushes JSM to F-35 customers

The Norwegian air force is promoting the integration of its indigenous anti-surface warfare Kongsberg Joint Strike Missile (JSM) to other future operators of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Speaking at Farnborough air show, Lt Col Sigurd Fongen says that the Norwegian requirement for the additional anti-ship capability on-board its F-35s is not unique to the country, and other future adopters of the aircraft could choose to co-develop the munition if desired.

The air force is in talks with the Australian government regarding the potential integration of the JSM on the Royal Australian Air Force’s F-35As, a decision on which is expected in 6-12 months, Fongen says.

“We are in discussions as we speak…We would obviously like other nations to get involved.”

It was announced in early July that Norwegian company Kongsberg was contracted for a NKr 1.1 billion ($161 million) phase III contract to complete the development and integration of JSM on the Norwegian F-35As.

“JSM is the first weapon that is tailored to the F-35 weapons bay,” Fongen adds. “We think all other F-35 users with this requirement will consider using this.”
Oslohas committed to the purchase of 52 conventional take-off and landing F-35As to replace its Lockheed F-16AMs.

It was further announced during the air show that Raytheon and Kongsberg have teamed up to promote the JSM globally.

“The US and its allies gain new and innovative options in the [anti-surface warfare] arena through this agreement,” says Taylor Lawrence, president of Raytheon Missile Systems.

“Raytheon’s global development capability allows us to identify and offer the advanced and affordable solutions our customers require for the complex missions of the future.”

Fonden says that although the political situation in Norway means that it is relatively stable militarily, it still needs to have this capability.

“This is a low tension area, and we’d like to keep it that way,” he adds. “From the Norwegian government’s perspective, it wants to keep up a good situational awareness.”

He adds that there is a requirement for the military to be lean and small, so only one capability can be procured. Consequently, this aircraft has to have all of the operational capability in one platform, which is why it chose to add the anti-surface warfare weapon.

Integration testing will be carried out on the F-16AMs that the service is replacing with the F-35, and the missile is expected to reach full operational capability by 2025.

The Norwegian air force is promoting the integration of its indigenous anti-surface warfare Kongsberg Joint Strike Missile (JSM) to other future operators of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

اختيار الرادار ES-05 Raven AESA لتجهيز المقاتلات Gripen NG

FARNBOROUGH: Raven selected for Gripen E

Selex ES’s Raven ES-05 active electronically scanned array radar has been selected to equip the next-generation Saab Gripen E combat aircraft.

The two companies have a long-standing relationship on the Gripen programme that stretches back to 2009. A production-standard radar is already fitted to the Gripen E demonstrator

Selex will also provide its Skyward G infrared search and track sensor and identification friend-or-foe system for the Gripen E, both of which will be confirmed in the coming months.

The systems manufacturer adds that its BriteCloud Expendable Active Decoy has also been chosen as an electronic warfare option for the aircraft, with trials of the system on the Gripen E expected to take place by year-end.

Sweden and Brazil have committed to acquire 106 Gripen Es, with the latter choosing the aircraft last year to meet its 36-aircraft F-X2 fighter requirement. Saab is partnering with Embraer for the offset and technology transfer portions of the Brazil deal.

Selex ES's Raven ES-05 active electronically scanned array radar has been selected to equip the next-generation Saab Gripen E combat aircraft.

FARNBOROUGH: TAI nears Anka export deal

Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) expects the first export deal for its Anka unmanned air vehicle to be signed "before the end of the year", a company executive says.

The Turkish air force agreed to acquire 10 of the medium-altitude, long-endurance type in a $300 million deal in October 2013, but TAI is now in discussions with four potential overseas customers for the Anka, says Bekir Ata Yilmaz, vice-president of strategy and corporate governance.

Although Yilmaz declines to identify the potential customers, Egypt is thought to have previously expressed an interest in acquiring up to 10 Ankas.

Sitting in the same size category as the market-leading Israel Aerospace Industries Heron and the General Atomics Predator B, Yilmaz believes the system is well placed to compete.

Yilmaz is “very confident” that certain European and NATO operators of rival systems that are “unhappy with what they have in their hands at the moment” would consider purchasing the Anka as a replacement. “We can target whatever market Heron or Predator is targeting,” Yilmaz said.

Anka will have a satellite communications capability that will provide beyond-line-of-sight surveillance for the UAV: “This is really going to be able to add significant capability to Anka,” Yilmaz said.“This is going to be a very competitive product.”

First delivery to the Turkish air force is expected in 2016. Three demonstrators have so far accumulated some 200h of flight testing.

Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) expects the first export deal for its Anka unmanned air vehicle to be signed 'before the end of the year', a company executive has revealed.

FARNBOROUGH: Thales develops new missile for UAVs

Thales has introduced a freefall variant of its precision-guided Lightweight Multirole Missile (LMM) suited for integration on a wide range of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs).

The company partnered with Textron Systems around 18 months ago to perform integration of the 6kg munition on-board an undisclosed UAV, which the partnership is now ready to bring to market.

A 70cm- (27.5in) long, 7.6cm-wide munition with a 2kg (4.4lb) warhead that provides a precision strike – including against armoured vehicles – it utilises an inertial navigation system with optional GPS as well as semi-active laser guidance.

In June it was announced that Thales would provide the standard configuration of LMM for the UK Royal Navy’s AgustaWestland Wildcat attack helicopters under the Future Anti-Surface Guided Weapons Light (FASGW-L) programme. The LMM will provide a light missile for the navy to use against small boats, fast attack craft and other small targets

“We’re launching this off the back of that good news,” Ricky Adair, sales and marketing director at Thales UK, tells Flight Daily News. “There is a gap in the market…and there is a requirement to prosecute and engage when required.”
Adair says that UAVs have proven their worth as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets, but operators are looking at increasing the capability of those aircraft – especially considering the cost of close air support using manned aircraft.

“We have been working tirelessly to prove this capability,” Adair says.
The company says it is platform neutral, with the UAV's payload the only factor. “We’re looking at creative ways to integrate innovatively to put more of these on-board [UAVs],” he says.

Thales will be able to deliver the freefall LMM in 12 months of receiving an order, and testing for potential customers is due to take place soon.

Textron manufactures UAVs including the RQ-7 Shadow in operation with the US Army and US Marine Corps, and the Aerosonde - designated XMQ-19A in US service.

Thales has introduced a freefall variant of its precision-guided Lightweight Multirole Missile (LMM) suited for integration on a wide range of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs).

FARNBOROUGH: BAE launches next-gen Striker II helmet

BAE Systems has used technologies it developed for the cancelled alternate helmet programme for the Lockheed Martin F-35 to launch the new Striker II model, which features an innovative helmet-mounted display.

An upgrade on the current Striker helmet utilised by Eurofighter Typhoon and Saab Gripen pilots, Striker II is being introduced at the Farnborough air show.

“The technology we delivered for the alternate F-35 programme we have now extended into the Striker II,” says Chris Colston, director of business development for advanced displays at BAE Systems. “All of the underlying technology developed for that is BAE’s.”

The company is officially launching the helmet on Wednesday, where it will provide more detail on the specific technical elements of Striker II.
However, it is understood that night vision capability will be integrated into the helmet with no need for separate goggles.

Vision Systems, a joint venture between Elbit Systems and Rockwell Collins, is the sole provider of the F-35's Generation 3 helmet since the 2013 cancellation of the alternate offering.

Following the 2013 cancellation of the alternate F-35 helmet programme that BAE Systems was contracted to develop, the company has evolved the technology to launch the Striker II helmet mounted display (HMD) system.

EUROFIGHTER AND NETMA SIGN STORM SHADOW INTEGRATION CONTRACT

FARNBOROUGH, UK, 17th July 2014: Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH today (July 17th) confirmed that NETMA, the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency, has placed an order with it to integrate the Storm Shadow long range attack missile onto the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Representatives from NETMA, Eurofighter, and the four core nations of the Eurofighter Programme (the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and Germany) convened for the Contract Signing Ceremony in the Eurofighter Pavilion at the Farnborough Air Show on Thursday.

Under the terms of what is known as a ‘Contract 4’ order from NETMA, Eurofighter will work with the three Eurofighter Partner Companies (BAE Systems, Airbus Space & Defence, and Alenia Aermacchi) and their supply base – including MBDA, the makers of the Storm Shadow missile - to integrate the weapon on the aircraft. The Contract will form part of what is known as the P2E enhancement package. Flight trials with Storm Shadow on Typhoon have been progressing since late 2013 and, working with Eurofighter operators, we expect to deliver an operational capability in line with their requirements.

Storm Shadow is a long range, all-weather, high precision, stand-off weapon already in service on Royal Air Force Tornados. It has been proven in operations to great effect in Iraq and Libya neutralising hardened command bunkers and other high value targets. The stealthy weapon design allows it to penetrate layered air defences whilst the long range of Storm Shadow allows it to be launched outside those defences increasing the launch aircraft survivability.

In the deep attack role Eurofighter Typhoon will carry two Storm Shadow missiles whilst maintaining the ability to carry 8 air-air missiles. This will enable Eurofighter Typhoon to fight its way in and out of the combat area.

Graham Farnell, General Manager of NETMA said: “We are delighted to be able to place this Contract with Eurofighter and we look forward to still further enhancements as the Programme progresses.”

Alberto Gutierrez, Chief Executive Officer of Eurofighter, said: “This is yet further evidence of a solid roll-out of capability from Eurofighter and also demonstrates the value of forward investment by industry to ensure a progressive and pro-active approach to weapons systems enhancement.”

                            Background information:

Eurofighter Typhoon is the most advanced new generation multi-role/swing-role combat aircraft currently available on the world market. Seven nations (Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Austria, Saudi Arabia and Oman) have already ordered the Eurofighter Typhoon. Eurofighter Typhoon is currently the largest military procurement programme in Europe.

Its high technology strengthens the position of European aerospace industry in the international market. The programme secures more than 100,000 jobs in 400 companies. Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH manages the programme on behalf of the Eurofighter Partner Companies Alenia Aermacchi, BAE Systems and Airbus Defence and Space in Germany and Spain, which are the most important aviation and aerospace companies in Europe.

Since delivery of the first Eurofighter Typhoon to the Royal Air Force in the United Kingdom end of 2003, a total of 412 aircraft have been delivered to six nations. The 100th Eurofighter was delivered to the Royal Air Force in September 2006. The 200th aircraft was handed over in November 2009 to the German Air Force. The 300th aircraft was delivered to the Spanish Air Force in November 2011 and the German Air Force received the 400th Eurofighter in December 2013.

In the past 10 years the Eurofighter fleet has demonstrated its high operational effectiveness in international missions and training exercises and has accumulated more than 250,000 flying hours.

FARNBOROUGH: RAF Typhoons to get Storm Shadow

RAF Typhoons will from mid-2016 be armed with MBDA’s long-range bunker-busting Storm Shadow cruise missile, following a contract signing tomorrow to integrate the weapon with the service's fleet.

Defence minister Philip Dunne was at the Eurofighter pavilion on Wednesday to announce the deal. Storm Shadow, which proved effective in Libya and Iraq, is already carried by the Panavia Tornado and Dassault Rafale combat types.

According to Eurofighter capability manager Paul Smith, RAF and Italian air force Typhoons have already flown with the weapon on board, so integration is well underway. About a year of test flights are to come – including drop tests - before the stand-off missile can be delivered to the RAF.

Along with the weapons upgrade, Typhoons will also get the new Captor-E electronically scanning radar. RAF aircraft IPA5, on display at Farnborough, has been modified with the unit and will commence flight testing next week after its return to BAE Systems's site in Warton.

Storm Shadow does not rely on Captor-E, but the improved radar will dramatically improve aircraft survivability in hostile territory by increasing situational awareness, says Smith, who flew Typhoons for the RAF until his recent retirement.

RAF Typhoons will from mid-2016 be armed with MBDA's long-range bunker-busting Storm Shadow cruise missile, following a contract signing tomorrow to integrate the weapon with the service's fleet.

Farnborough 2014: Thales debuts Talios pod

Thales has released additional details for their new Thales Optronique targeting pod, known as Pod de Désignation Laser de Nouvelle Génération (PDL NG) for the French Air Force and has given it the company name Talios, at the Farnborough International Airshow 2014.

Designed as a follow-on to its Damocles targeting pod, the open architecture and sensor payload allow Talios to operate as a multi-function pod, dealing with target acquisition and designation through to non-traditional ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) tasks. It will, said General Bruno Depardon (rtd), product line manager for airborne optronics at the company, "deliver the right information at the right time for all conflicts".

While most current targeting pods can fix/track, target, engage and assess, Talios has added the functions of finding the target and disseminating its co-ordinates to other air- or ground-based units, Depardon said. This he called "permanent vision".

The sensors packaged into Talios comprise a high-definition (HD) mid-wave infrared (MWIR) thermal imager, sourced from Sofradir, with a dual field-of-view; a combined visible and short-wave infrared (VIR/SWIR) HD TV camera and a four-laser suite of rangefinder, designator, spot tracker and marker.

According to Depardon, smart processing allows the input and display of all relevant data (including lethal and risk area indicators, and smart tracking) over the infrared image (picture-in-picture capability) enabling rapid target acquisition, be it on the ground or in the air.

Thales has been under contract to develop PDL NG/Talios from the French defence procurement agency, (DGA) since 2009, with risk reduction work being undertaken in 2013 and a formal contract announced in January. The Talios pod is expected to begin flight trials in 2016 with an anticipated initial operating capability (IOC) in 2018.
