PARIS: JF-17 wins first export order

The Chengdu/Pakistan Aeronautical Complex JF-17 Thunder fighter has secured its first confirmed export deal.

“A contract has been signed with an Asian country,” says Air Commodore Khalid Mahmood, the Pakistan air force officer who leads sales and marketing efforts for the type.

Citing client sensitivities, he declined to specify the customer and the number of aircraft it will obtain. Deliveries will start in 2017.

He says that sales for the JF-17, which is targeted for developing nations, have been held up by political turmoil in several Middle Eastern countries.

The aircraft is making its flying debut at this year’s air show. Pakistan’s air force has brought three examples this year. One will appear on the static display, one will appear in the flying display, and the third will serve as a backup.

The JF-17 contingent at Paris this year is 80 strong, representing a significant marketing push. Khalid says the show is a good venue for meeting prospective customers from French speaking countries.

He says that 11 countries are looking at the type, which mirrors previous comments made by Chinese defence export agency Catic, which also markets the aircraft, and Pakistan air force officials.

Khalid also provided an update of Pakistan’s induction of the type. So far, 54 examples have been delivered. The first 50 were originally delivered in a Block I configuration, and these are in the process of being updated to a Block II standard. The Block II configuration features improved avionics and better software, and adds a fixed air-to-air refuelling probe.

An additional 46 aircraft will be delivered in the Block II configuration. A subsequent 50 aircraft, which will push Pakistan’s fleet to 150 examples, will have a Block III configuration. These will all be delivered by the end of 2018.

The aircraft’s developers are still working out the specifications of the Block III aircraft, but upgrades could include an active electronically scanned array (AESA) or Passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar, says Khalid. The configuration could also include an infrared search and track (IRST) sensor, stations under the forward fuselage for various pods, and expanded precision weapons capabilities.

A two-seat variant is also planned, which will serve mainly as a trainer. Pakistan produces 58% of the airframe and China 42%. The JF-17 is powered by a single Klimov RD-93 engine.

The Chengdu/Pakistan Aeronautical Complex JF-17 Thunder fighter has secured its first confirmed export deal.

PARIS: Hammer time for Egyptian Rafales

Egypt’s recent order for 24 Dassault Rafales has hit the spot for Sagem, with the French armaments specialist to arm the fleet with AASM “Hammer” air-to-surface weapons.

Announced at the show, the order covers all three versions of the combat-proven weapon, which respectively combine INS/GPS, infrared and laser guidance modes. Deliveries will commence towards the end of 2016, says Sagem, which also will supply support services under the deal.

Sagem says the Hammer’s stand-off range – which exceeds 32nm (60km) – will give the Egyptian air force “a significant operational advantage”, as its Rafales will gain the ability “to conduct all-weather, day/night precision ground strikes against fixed and moving targets”.

Operational with the French air force and navy, the AASM – which adds precision guidance and propulsion kits to standard bombs – entered operational use in 2008.

Also at the show, Sagem and its partner Rafaut are proposing a Hammer integration for the Lockheed Martin C-130 tactical transport.

                            الخطوط الجوية السعودية سوف تشتري 20 طائرة نقل من طراز ايرباص A 330-300 ، و 30 طائرة A 320

                            PARIS: Saudia taking 20 regional A330s plus 30 A320s

Saudi Arabian flag-carrier Saudia is committing to 20 of the regional version of the Airbus A330-300, under an agreement which will also include 30 baseline A320s.

The carrier had already been revealed as an initial customer for the new lower-weight A330 variant, which is being aimed at high-density shorter routes.

Airbus has confirmed that Saudia, which already has 12 A330s in its fleet, will be the first operator of the type. The aircraft, which will benefit from technology derived from the A350 and A380, is being developed to serve routes up to 3,000nm with a lower weight of around 200t.

No engine selections have been given but Saudia’s current A330s are all powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700s while its A320-family fleet is fitted with CFM International CFM56s.

Saudia has not detailed the intended configuration of the regional A330, which is designed to accommodate up to 400 passengers.

But director general Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser says that the “unique flexibility” of the aircraft, and its “high capacity”, will allow the airline to expand its domestic and regional network.

Airbus chief operating officer for customers John Leahy says the airframer sees a “significant market opportunity” for the regional version of the twinjet.

No delivery date has been given by either side for the A330s or A320s.

Airbus had expected the regional A330 to enter service in 2015 but, nearly two years since the type’s formal launch, Saudia is the only customer for the aircraft to have emerged.

Saudia’s agreement will give a much-needed lift to A330 production which is already due to undergo a rate cut in the transition period to delivery of the first re-engined A330neo in 2017.

Paris Air Show 2015: Boeing to start work on AH-6i production facility later this year

Boeing is to begin building a production line for its AH-6i Little Bird light attack and reconnaissance helicopter later this year, a company official disclosed in late May.

Speaking ahead of the Paris Air Show, Brad Rounding, business development for rotary-winged platforms at Boeing's Mesa facility in Arizona, said that work to build the line would start in December, with assembly of the first helicopter following in December 2016. The line will then produce the 24 helicopters currently contracted at a rate of two per month through to December 2017.

As had been previously announced, MD Helicopters Inc (MDHI) will provide the green fuselages ahead of systems and weapons integration by Boeing.

"Having a warm production line will be a real game changer for the AH-6i, giving potential customers a real show of confidence in the aircraft," Rounding said.

Boeing currently has one customer for its AH-6i, with 24 helicopters under contract. While Rounding declined to name the customer, the US Army has officially disclosed it to be Saudi Arabia.

This contract was awarded to Boeing in September 2014 (although it was actually revealed by Boeing in late 2013), and in April of this year the US Army's Non-Standard Rotary-Wing Aircraft project office (NSRWA PO) issued a sources sought notice for transporting these helicopters from the United States to Saudi Arabia, as well as for pilot and maintainer training.

The first production-standard AH-6i made its maiden flight out of Mesa on 1 May. According to Rounding, this aircraft, which the company has designated the AH-6X, is currently undergoing flight trails.

Boeing has previously estimated a potential global market of around 700 helicopters for the Little Bird, predominately aimed at replacing ageing MD 500-series and AH-1 Cobra platforms. While Rounding declined to name specific countries, he said that there was a great deal of interest shown by several potential operators. Jordan signed a letter of intent some years ago, but has yet to sign a contract.

Though this number includes the 400-something helicopters for the US Army's now-defunct Armed Aerial Scout requirement, the service has said that it still has a requirement for a light observation helicopter of this class, raising the prospect for a future procurement.
