Rafael Unveiling Litening 5, RecceLite XR

Coupling Rafael’s latest reconnaissance and targeting pods with scene-matching electro-optical-guided weapons enables air forces to tighten targeting cycles from days and hours to a few seconds.

Rafael (Static A8) is unveiling the Litening 5 at the Paris Air Show. The fifth generation of the targeting pod that defined this product category two decades ago is now capable of targeting from long range, enabling strike aircraft to employ guided weapons from standoff range without relying on external support.

Litening 5 employs a new sensor pack, utilizing an optical assembly and larger aperture tailored specifically for the new sensors, enabling the increased identification and recognition distance. The pod uses two FLIRS – a Mid-Wave Infra-Red (IR) and Short Wave IR (SWIR). The later extends observation range using active laser illumination. Complementing the sensor pack is a color CCD HD-TV, improving target recognition and separation of man-made objects that are often harder to spot in the thermal, monochromatic image. Color improves the ability to share a common understanding with ground forces and recognize specific vehicles based on their color. Images can be fused or displayed separately, based on the level of avionics used in the aircraft.

Rafael’s “image-based common targeting language,” also known as Matchguide, is integrated in the new pod. This allows rapid target handoff between the targeting pod or ground-based forward air controller and guided weapons carried on board. Matchguide is fully integrated in the Litening 5, enabling the pilot or ground controller to designate a target simply by touching its image on a display to deliver the targeting as coordinates or a scene to the attacking weapon. This method dramatically shortens the “sensor to shooter cycle.”

Rafael is also introducing a new version of its tactical reconnaissance pod, RecceLite XR, at the Paris Air Show. This multi-spectral, multi-role, real-time standoff reconnaissance system consists of an airborne pod, a wide digital datalink and a ground exploitation station.

Similar to the Litening 5, Reccelite XR received an enhanced sensor package comprising megapixel-size arrays of Near-Infra-Red (NIR), MWIR, panchromatic (color) sensors and SWIR. As with the Litening 5, SWIR adds a significant long-range performance, since its spectral band is the least affected by atmospheric absorption. The gimbaled payload enables stabilized photography, irrespective of aircraft maneuvers or deviation from flight route.

Litening 5 and Reccelite XR share many common assemblies and modules and are carried by similar aircraft, thus contributing to efficient operation and lower life cycle support costs. More than 1,500 Litening targeting and navigation pods are currently flying on dozens of platform types with more than 25 air forces worldwide. RecceLite is in operational service with 10 air forces.

PARIS: Lockheed, Raytheon and Bombardier form JSTARS team

Dovetailing on Northrop Grumman’s teaming announcement this week, Lockheed Martin has revealed that it is partnering with Raytheon and Bombardier to offer an “ultra-long range” Global Express-based joint surveillance target attack radar system (JSTARS) aircraft to the US Air Force.

The air force is looking to replace its 16 Northrop E-8C JSTARS ground-looking surveillance and battle management airplanes with a smaller, business class platform that is cheaper to operate and maintain. The air force recapitalization programme seeks an almost one-for-one replacement – 17 jets.

Northrop has teamed with L-3 Aerospace Systems and General Dynamics to offer a Gulfstrea business jet-based proposal. Boeing is offering its 737-700.

LM’s advanced development programmes unit Skunk Works is drawing up the company’s JSTARS proposal. The air force says it will fund three teams initially to mature their competing designs before picking a winner some time in 2017.

Skunk Works VP and general manager Rob Weiss said Lockheed’s experience in systems integration and open mission systems prepares it well to offer the “best possible solution” to the air force.

Bombardier vice president of specialised aircraft Stéphane Villeneuve says the company is well positioned to support the JSTARS programme, having delivered the civil BD-700 aircraft that is the basis for the USAF E-11A “battlefield airborne communications node” type.

Raytheon brings its airborne radar and mission systems integration experience to the team. “We are committed to building modular, easily adapted and upgraded open systems to help our warfighters stay ahead of future threats,” says Rick Yuse, president of Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems.

The air force intends to spend upwards of $1.3 billion on JSTARS development through 2020.

شركة Bell للطوافات تقدم تكنولوجيا جديدة لاجل تطوير الطوافة متغيرة المراوح V-22

Paris Air Show 2015: Bell proposes JMR-TD/FVL technology for future V-22 upgrade

Bell Helicopter sees the prospect of the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor that it has jointly developed with Boeing being fitted with technology developed for its V-280 Valor Joint MultiRole-Technology Demonstrator/Future Vertical-Lift (JMR-TD/FVL) platform in a future mid-life upgrade (MLU), company CEO John Garrison said at the Paris Air Show.

Speaking at Le Bourget on 17 June, Garrison said the V-22 should be due an MLU in about the 2020 to 2025 timeframe, and that systems and components now under development for the V-280 tiltrotor could well see their way into such an effort.

"The V-22 will be over 30 years old by that time, and so an MLU will probably be needed. Bell is currently working with Boeing [on options for upgrading the V-22], but it is still very much in its early mapping stages," he said.

Garrison did not disclose what form a V-22 MLU might take, or indeed what V-280 technology might be incorporated.

JMR-TD is an effort currently being run by the US Army to inform its future helicopter requirements and capabilities. As well as Bell and its Valor, the army has also contracted a joint Sikorsky-Boeing team to develop its SB>1 Defiant compound co-axial helicopter under the programme (and has allocated funding to AVX and Karem to continue their research in the field). Both teams will build prototype demonstrators with the goal of flying them towards the end of 2017. Based on this 'fly-off', the army will downselect to one to go and develop the FVL family of rotorcraft.

The Valor and Defiant are being proposed for the FVL (Medium) requirement, which will see the army's current UH-60 Black Hawk and AH-64 helicopters replaced in the 2030 timeframe (though not necessarily by one platform). A follow-on FVL (Heavy) programme will look to replace the Chinook helicopter from about 2040 (although that particular platform has actually been earmarked to remain in service through to 2060).

While the army has said that FVL (Medium) might be satisfied by both a utility and an attack platform, Garrison noted that, in his opinion, the two transport and attack requirements can be fulfilled by the V-280 alone.

Paris Air Show 2015: Sagem studying new warheads for AASM

                                Key Points

                                • Sagem expects to complete a study later this year on fitting the AASM kit onto a range of new warhead sizes
                                • The company also confirmed Egypt as an export customer for the rocket-boosted PGM

Sagem is working to add new warheads to the capabilities of the Armement Air-Sol Modulaire (AASM) rocket-boosted precision-guided munition (PGM), the company confirmed on 16 June at the Paris Air Show.

Marketed for export as Hammer, the missile has been ordered by Egypt as part of the February government-to-government agreement between the French and Egyptian governments for 24 Dassault Rafale fighter aircraft and FREMM frigates, Sagem confirmed at Le Bourget.

Sagem would not confirm the volume of AASMs ordered as part of the sale, or the value of the contract itself, but stated it was a "major" sale.

AASM is a guidance kit for gravity bombs, much like the US Paveway line. AASM offers an additional standoff capability however, as it features a rocket motor than can boost the munition's range out to 60 km.

The AASM is currently qualified for use on 250 kg Mk82 gravity bombs, although the company has previously raised the prospect of installing the PGM-kit on 125 kg, 500 kg, and 1,000 kg warheads.

Speaking to IHS Jane's Sagem stated it is now in the midst of a study into the software and hardware adaptations needed to install and qualify AASM on different sizes of warhead. The company expects that this study should be completed by the end of the year, although any timeline for adding extra warhead sizes to the AASM's portfolio will depend on customer needs.

There are currently three types of the AASM.
